Week round-up: Prue and Alice's last day at school

On Friday we said goodbye to Prue and Alice, volunteers from Australia and England respectively, who have been teaching English at FKC for the last few weeks. It has been a joy having them here with us and we wish them all the best as they return back to life in their home countries.

A child hugs Alice for the last time.
She has been teaching the kindergarten
class for six weeks. She also conducted
music lessons on Thursdays and Fridays

FKC staff and children gather around Prue (left)
and Alice (right) for a final group photo.

Prue says her final goodbyes to her students.
She has been helping out with the Kindergarten
and Starter classes for two weeks.

Meet a class! The starter class

The starter class are the second class at FKC. Once they have learned to read and write for about a year in kindergarten they will move to the starter class where they are exposed to more vocabulary and the basics of conversation.

The students listening to a role play exercise
They often cover a range of basic everyday vocabulary such as numbers, colours, food, animals, jobs etc. The students are put in classes depending of their ability, and therefore we have students from 6 to 14 years old in here.

Once they have studied here for a year and passed their exam, they can move onto our 'Let's Go' class!

Meet a class! Kindergarten class

Here at FKC we have four different classes - Kindergarten, Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced.
Since students start school at different ages our classes are set depending on ability.

The Kindergarten class is a very laid back affair to some degree! Learning English is difficult at first, because you need to know a new alphabet, with weird shapes that are called letters, and the sounds made in English are very strange to Cambodians, like 'th' and 'ch' and sometimes 's'!

Sometimes this gets a little too much, so we focus on drawing and colouring instead. This is still good for our hand eye co-ordination and gets our learning colours. The rest of the time we play games, learn a bit of maths, sing English songs - our favourites are Twinkle, Twinkle and Old McDonald!

Support our Textiles and Sewing Class

As well as our English, Maths, Music and Dance classes we run vocational training for older students. This helps them learn and develop a skill that they can use to find a job with once they have completed their education.

Textiles students measuring and sewing fabric
Currently they're learning to make shirts, trousers and skirts for our school uniform. This will then be given to the children that cannot afford to buy a school uniform at the beginning of the next academic year - in January.

We are looking for sponsors to help us buy all the material and equipment needed, any donation would be welcome so have a look below and see if there is something you would like to purchase for us. Alternatively you might have some second hand equipment you can send to us / bring out on your trip to Cambodia!
